As with literacy, you will become computer literate much more quickly if you use a computer in your spare time and not just during hours when it is assigned. If you do not already have a computer, consider investing in a simple model so that you can use it during your leisure hours. You may find that by surfing the internet in search of information about other hobbies, you will acquire more facility with the computer itself. It is now possible to purchase a reasonably fast desktop or laptop computer that can access the internet and use up-to-date software for a few hundred dollars. It is a worthwhile investment, especially if you plan to become an office worker. If you lack the resources to purchase your own machine, most public libraries now provide limited access to computers.

Go to your local community college or community center to take basic computer classes. Some of them may be free, and they will provide an entree into the world of computing. Enjoy!
