Windows 7 is a very fast operating system, Microsoft’s fastest to date. It works well with a variety of hardware but may actually work better on older hardware or computers in comparison to previous versions of their operating systems. One thing you can do to speed windows up is to take advantage of a new feature called “Ready Boost”. Ready Boost allows you to take a standard high speed thumb or flash drive and plug it in to an available USB port allowing the operating system to use that storage as additional memory.

If you have limited graphics capabilities on your computer, then one thing that you can do is to turn off some of the fancy visuals and some of the prettier eye candy that Windows 7 has to offer by default. Select a theme other than Aero, like Windows Classic. Not using translucent window borders and application animations will speed up how fast windows can open and close. Also keep your desktop and taskbar free of clutter. In addition by going to the start bar, clicking on the Windows logo, and in the search box type “msconfig” will give you a utility that will allow you to change what applications start when your computer starts. Many big name applications depend on loaders that start when your computer does to make their applications load faster, but often this comes at the expense of Windows speed.

Windows 7 has many new features that can help increase your productivity. One such tip is how to place two active windows side by side without the pain of resizing them. This can be useful for having a document open in one window and a show or an internet browser in another. Windows 7 makes this very simple, all you need to do is drag the window to the edge of the screen by the title bar until the mouse touches the edge of the screen. When it does it will snap into a easy to use half screen window, simply do that with your second window and now you have two of them side by side. This works best on larger or widescreen monitors as smaller monitors can make it hard for you to see both applications at the same time.

Another neat trick with windows is known as icon grouping on the taskbar. You don’t need to do anything to take advantage of this feature, its enabled by default. How it works is that applications have one space on the taskbar, and If you have multiple instances of that application open, they will all group together. So if you were to have two documents open, simply run your mouse over the icon on the taskbar and get a preview of the applications running with a real time view.

In order to use wireless printers, you will need a wireless network card. Most printers have a wireless network card installed. For other printers, you can add on a wireless adapter. Years ago you had to have a computer connected to a printer as a print server, but this is no longer the case. If you have a wireless router, you can also connect your wireless printer to the router using an Ethernet cable.

A wireless printer uses a separate IP address to transfer information over a wireless network. You will need to set up your computer so it will communicate directly with the printer using the IP address. Since all printers are different, and PCs use a different setup than a Mac, you will need to follow the directions in your printer’s user manual to configure the computer and printer. If you no longer have the manual, just search for it online. Most manuals are available online for no extra cost.
