It really hasn’t been long since we began using computers in our homes; just under 30 years. Now even kindergarteners are using computers in school.
Many older people don’t even know how to use a cellular telephone, but they’ll get one because someone advised them to. It’s a good idea to teach them to text message.
Text messaging has become a perk that many people now think they cannot live without, and it can be used as an alert system or safety measure for the elderly.
Convincing Elderly to use new Technology can be Hard
Like many older folks, 86-year old Lois in Portland, Oregon had to be convinced before she’d buy a cell phone and learn to text. She thought how silly it was, considering we can just call on the phone.
Once it ‘clicked’ in her brain, she realized that she can ask for help even if her son in-law was on the phone already, and even if he‘s already in the car and on his way, or when he’s in church. They don’t often see the benefits right away and they might need some coaxing.
Convince them of how easy it is to send someone a message that says, “I fell in the kitchen,” without having to call. People don‘t even have to talk to each other and the message still comes across. An easy “Pick up some milk and eggs” can be typed in and the groceries come in the door with the son in-law.
What ever needs to be said, they can be convinced and taught to use the new technology to everyone’s benefit; especially theirs.
